Entertainment Tonight: Stepmom Chat

ETHost: We are chatting live today with Jena Malone, who recently starred alongside JULIA ROBERTS and SUSAN SARANDON in 'Stepmom.' Our first question is from Kathy! Kathy says: Did you go into 'Stepmom' at all a little scared? Were you nervous about working with people who you admired so much?

Jena: Yeah, I was a little nervous. But the nervousness was from admiring them for so long. The nervousness came from trying to be really good around them.

April says: What was it like working with Julia Roberts? Is she just as pretty in person?

Jena: Yeah, I think much, much prettier in person. She's just a sweet, well-rounded person. And when you're working with someone seven days a week, nine hours a day, it's really great to be around someone like that.

Mel says: Do you go to a regular school, or does the studio school you?

Jena: Well, when I'm working, I have a teacher who comes to the set with me and who teaches me up to five hours a day. But before that I go to private school in New York.

julianna says: Was it hard playing someone with the problems that your character had in 'Stepmom' - fighting with a stepmother?

Jena: It wasn't hard, it was more of a challenge, because it's something that I've been lucky enough not to have to face. So the challenge came in showing something that other teenagers had gone through so they could relate.

venny says: Jena you'll be a future Oscar winner!!!

Jena: Oh, that's very sweet of you!

Joe says: What is the best part about growing up in Hollywood? What is the worst?

Jena: The worst part is being under the spotlight constantly.... it makes you worried about everything you do. You have enough trouble growing up with everything already, and being under a spotlight makes it more difficult. The best part is just traveling around and meeting people around the world. It makes you more sophisticated.

Pinky says: Did any memorable events happen on the set while filming 'Stepmom'?

Jena: I turned 13 so that's pretty memorable. It's an age where you're not quite a little girl anymore, but still a teenager. The best memory is when Julia rented out the Six Flags amusement park and that was really cool.

CindyBell says: How old are you? You look really young in the film.

Jena: I'm 14. Yes, I know I look young. Everyone thinks I look 12. I'm sure I'll look better when I'm older.

jazzyjeff says: Do you have any siblings in show business?

Jena: No, I don't. I have a little sister who's 17 months.

Sarah says: What do you do in your spare time when your not working?

Jena: I kickbox. I spend a lot of time with my friends because I work so much so it's a priority of mine to spend as much time with my friends as possible. Parties, that kind of thing. I don't do a lot of sports because I'm kinda lazy. Just kickboxing.

Jelly Bean says: 'Contact' is one of my favorite movies! How did you like working on it?

Jena: It was wonderful. I only shot for about a week and a half. And working with JODIE FOSTER and ROBERT ZEMECKIS was really, really great. And DAVID MORSE is one of my favorite actors and me playing his daughter was so wonderful!

Jeanie says: What are your parents like? Are they really excited about your career?

Jena: Well, it's just me and my mom -- my mom never married. But she's very proud. I think any mom would be proud of any of their children going and fulfilling their dreams at any age. That's really wonderful.

Steph says: What are you coming out with after 'Stepmom'?

Jena: I just finished a film called 'For the Love of the Game,' with KEVIN COSTNER and KELLY PRESTON. And before I did an independent film called 'Book of Stars' with MARY STUART MASTERSON, which should be coming out in November.

Opi says: Do you have a favorite movie of all time?

Jena: There's so many. One of my favorites is 'The Shawshank Redemption' -- I can watch that film over and over again. But there are so many it's hard to pick just one... but that would be one of them.

Larsen says: Do you plan on acting when you get older as well?

Jena: Yeah! I plan on acting for as long as I can. It's something I enjoy so much. But I feel as I get older that I may decide to pursue other things with acting, or in the industry. You really really have to love it, because you only get to act about one third of the time with the work involved. There's publicity and interviewing, and pursuing jobs. And the days are long. I feel I might have had about ten hours of acting in my whole career. So you really have to love it because there's a lot of other stuff that you might have to sacrifice for it.

Billy says: Which young actress do you admire the most?

Jena: CLAIRE DANES. I admire a lot of the young actresses and would love to be in a film with a lot of them. Also CHRISTINA RICCI and NATALIE PORTMAN.

Geegee says: I thought 'Stepmom' was a really powerful movie. It makes you thankful for what you have, such as your health!

Jena: Thank you. That's wonderful that a film can make one more person conscious about a disease, that's really what all of us actors and actresses want to achieve. It's wonderful to be compared to amazing actresses, but sometimes you just want to be yourself... Sometimes you feel like you get hidden in the shadow of someone's career -- like Jodie, Susan or Julia, but I would love to be compared to just me.

Carla says: Do you feel like you're missing out on your youth since you work so much?

Jena: I mean, yeah, I think you miss out on some little stuff. Obviously when you're working you miss out on some of the things other kids are doing. But when you're following your passion, it makes other things better.

VAMom says: What is your favorite subject in school?

Jena: My favorite is literature, just because I love reading good English and good books. I think it's the greatest way of learning about the history of this country or about people. You can be touched and inspired from books and maybe use it in a film. So, definitely literature for me.

ETHost: Jena is out of time folks! Thank you so much for chatting with us today!

Jena: Thanks to everyone who joined me for this chat! It was great fun!
